Yes
Had a look at both these camera's and i like them both so im pretty stuck on which one to choose as my start digital slr camera.
Just looking for peoples thoughts on it, wanting a starter nikon thats not to expensive so i can build up a lens collection first and these 2 are the main ones ive decided on.
thanks :)

Depends if you want to use a greater selection of lens, especially primes from Nikon range by using the D70s (get the s version, not the D70, the s version ironed out the few problems the older version had), or use the new purposed built lens with focus motors in that use the D60 body. Personally I would go with either a D70s or D80 and stay away from the D40-D60 models.

There is a used D80 for sale at the moment which is not a bad price, but no lens. I realise it does not answer your question, but it may be worth the extra few pounds over the D70 :)

That would be mine:whistling: .. i was having the same dilemma but decided something a little new with a bigger screen and a few more up to date features would make things a little easier for me. Decided on the D80 over the D70/s. Cracking camera just found it a little small for my shovel like hands

I miss my D70s....:'(

I'd choose a D70 over a D80 just on flash sync alone....:)

i have recently upgraded my D70s to D300 and i still occassionally use it. its a fantastic camera and great as a back up or for my "wandering about" camera. never had a problem with it once and it was an excellent starting out DSLR.

I've recently sold my D70 having had it from new, and it was a cracking first DLSR.

I would definitely recommend one. Dunno about the others but I really liked mine, if it wasn't for the fact that I needed to sell it to fund my new one I would have kept it! :D

Does the D70 and D80 have a focus motor in body?

Yes, its only the D40/60 series and the current D3000 and D5000 that don't, which means your choice of good value lenses is limited.

Worth bearing in mind that any D70 will be considerably older than a D60....

Thats strange that they reduced the sync speed on the D80, 1/500 v 1/200 quite abit of difference, that if you need this capability. But would go for the D70s version not the D70 version if you can find one.

It's to do with the type of shutter used, the same goes for the first of the Canon 1D models

Good to know, I will probably look at picking up an older used DSLR in a few months when I can afford to replace my A700 and not stay out of the loop for long, the old Nikons (D70/80/60) look to be very cheap secondhand and that may be a route I go down.

cheers for all the info guys
yeah ive handled both cameras and am going for the D70 now thanks. hopefully it'll do me good as my first digital slr!
