D700. lens wide enough for group shots

Hi all, recently got a d700 and just want something to cover potential group shots. Which is about 5% of what I may have to do, as such I do not want to make a huge investment in say the Nikon 28mm f1.4 etc..

Has anyone stumbled across some lenses, prime/zoom with the focal length 24/28mm - 35mm included that are nice and sharp at f5.6 or smaller?

I have heard the 28-85 is a cheap sharp zoom, but was wondering about any others?

what about the 18-35mm? i love mine

They're only a bit more than that new.

Have a look at MPB, they've got a load of 24-85 2.8-4 for 150-ish, not the best condition but optically sound. Not as good as the 24-85 3.5-4.5 AF-S but they don't often come up at a cheap price. I got mine for £139 from MPB.

My only currently used lens is a 28mm f/3.5 AI which cost me £45

It's certainly more than sharp enough for me :cool:

Grays have an Ai one for £95 or the Ais for £165 ... manual focus on the D700 is pretty easy, and these older lenses are well engineered, a joy to use.

Boliston, 105mm f2.5 AiS is worth getting, if you are ever in the market for that focal length.
 
Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8. You can pick one up used for around £200 and it's an excellent lens for the money. Just Google for reviews and see for yourself. The one without the built-in AF motor is the one to get.

The build quality is in a different league to any modern AF lens. The focus damping is just right so I can set it without the risk that it will change while I'm carrying the camera and it brushes against me as it hangs from the Blackrapid strap.

I notice that Nikon still build the 28mm f/2.8 AIS and Grays sell it for around the £700 mark.
 
By the way, the 28mm 2.8 AF-D is also worth looking out for. Not especially sharp wide open but pretty good at 5.6. I think I sold mine for about £130.

The 24mm is quite a bit cheaper, and sharper at 2.8 in my experience (had one 24mm and two 20mm's)

They don`t auto focus so are no use to anyone.


Lets keep them cheap eh..............;)

Seems people are cottoning on, prices on the bay are going mental.
 
I have an 18-35 and it was only £180, if you did buy one and found you dint like it Im sure you could re coup your money by selling it
