D7000 question, about lenses etc

Hi

Just a quick question folks

I'm a complete newb so please bare with me as I'm still learning,

I'm going to buy a Nikon d7000, but it comes with a 18-105mm vr lens. I want my camera to do portrait photos and close ups. Will this be the right lens for me? Which other lenses would you recommend? Please add the links where i can buy from,

and love it, but there is a new 50mm prime you might also want to look at.

Yeah a 50mm 1.8 is a great portrait lens, also very cheap but one of the best lenses to use, and a great lens to start off with. It was one of my first lenses I brought. I also own the 18-105 and for a kit lens I think its fantastic and a perfect lens to use for most situations

The first thing I would suggest is take the camera with the kit lens. It's a flexible lens that you may find does eveything that you need. You'll run into a bit of difficulty in low light, but the D7000 is pretty good when it comes to high ISO shots. The VR will also be helpful.

However there is a two trick pony that may cover your specific needs, and that is the 60mm F/2.8 AF-S micro. This will work well as both a portrait and an extreme close up lens. The problem with this lens is that it's likely to be to tight for indoor use, and for extreme close up you'll find yourself very close to your subject which means you'll block light.

The 35mm AF-S which has been suggested (although I personally prefer the 50mm AF D) and the 105mm AF-S VR micro (big money) would probably be a very good set for what you want to do.

Before you commit to spending more money just see if the kit lens suits your needs. By all accounts it's not a bad lens at all.

Good advice re the 60mm but I don't agree that it would be too tight for portraits...sure in a small room it might be but otherwise it would be fine....especially for little people. The 60mm on a crop is obviously very close in length to 85mm on a full frame which is seen by most as an essential portrait lens.
