I paid £232 for the complete collection for Apple Aperture...
I think the difference is that the individual items or the full full suite you can use the plugins within PS as well....For me Aperture with its powerful brushes and the Nik Software complete collection is plenty to deal with any photo editing requirement I ever can imagine...

Apart from that fact, your chosen CPU won't fit the motherboard

Thanks Andy. So Intel Core i7 3.5GHz. This totals up to just over £900 :bonk:, which is still cheaper than the iMac by £700 plus will have 16GB DDR3 opposed to 4GB with the iMac.
So if I went the PC route I'd get all this plus CS6 for the same price as the iMac 27.

No scott, for a lot less.. as said the upgrade to CS6 from CS3 will only cost you about £199 direct from adobe.. not £620

You haven't mentioned what your disk and associated io is at the moment. Nor psu or graphics card Even when you do an upgrade of the said parts you could still encounter bottle necks in the other areas.
Also if you already have such a fantastic screen etc you could sell that to bring the cost of switch down and do a true comparison. Alternative have you consider the i7 quad core mac mini if you already have such great other components.
Ps adobe allows you to switch platform as well so it is not like you have to buy it all over again.

Personally, I'd go with the i5-2550K (which appears cheaper than the -2500K for some reason) and overclock it (you can overclock the ones with a K suffix). You'll need a decent heatsink (say £30-£40) but you should be able to get to 4.3 -4.5 GHz easily.
There isn't much real world speed difference between the i5 and i7. You could also get a MUCH cheaper motherboard - I suspect you don't need the features of the Extreme (which is primarily designed as a gamers rig for multiple graphics cards. You could get something from £80 up which also might let you use the onboard graphics of the i5 processors. If you only to Photoshop, the onboard Intel graphics will be fine.

If you go the Mac route, you will still need a reasonable amount of RAM, but you can get this so cheaply from Crucial / Amazon, etc that 12/16GB should be plenty affordable. Stating the obvious, the price difference between the 2 options does also include a 27" monitor with the iMac, which I guess would be £500-600 or so for something like a Dell 27" IPS monitor.
I personally moved to a Mac (27" iMac) about 3 years ago, and would not choose to change back, however I also use several flavours of Windows every day for work. Aperture vs. Lightroom is a personal thing - I tried both and choose Lightroom, but many people prefer Aperture. As others have said, you can trial LR4 for free so nothing to loose there, however I think Apple have now removed the ability to trial Aperture.
Downside of the iMac against PC is the disk, which is not straightforward to replace or add. You can buy them with an SSD fitted as well as a normal disk, but this bumps the cost A LOT and is very expensive for what they add, plus unless you want to go with external Thunderbolt disk (very pricey currently) the fastest external disk you can add is FW800, as they don't support USB3 yet. Apple are expected to be announcing upgrades to most of their machines next week, so you might be wise to wait until then to see what the changes are, if any.

I've stuck with Windows (7) and ordered some new parts today for the upgrade. I should hopefully end up with this bunch...
CPU - Intel Core i7 3.4GHz Quad Core
MB - Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD4
RAM - 16-20GB DDR3
Graphics - PNY NVIDIA GeForce GTS250 PCI-Express 512MB (existing component)
Power Supply- Blue Storm 500W (existing component)

dont mean that he doesnt have a couple of nikon pro lenses or flash.Chances are that he isn't an NPS member, if his last body was a D80.

Doesn't. But to be an NPS member, you have to be a pro earning a living from photography.
You can be an NPU member if you have enough listed items.
I only highlighted it because to recieve NPS help, you have to be a member. Just didn't want the OP to waste his time.
Back on subject, he could download the trial version of CS6 and see if he still ahs the problem.
OR email me a full RAW file and I will check for him.
