Hi,

I am likely to upgrade to a D90 and wondered is it worth keeping my D40 18-55mm kit lens and selling the 18-105mm VR D90 kit lens ? Would I see any decrease/increase with quality on the D90 kit lens ?

Thanks.

if you do decide to go down this route i have a 18-55vr that i want to trade for a 18-105vr

sorry , just re-read your post , i see you already have the 18-55 doh!

no worries, its non VR. I have read that the 18-105mm can be soft and that generally the 18-55mm is a good lens...I have some good results from it. I just wondered if the 18-105 is a downgrade in image quality ?

Thanks.

I have seen some lovely images from the 18-105VR, nearly bought one, picked up a used 28-105 f3.5 - f4.5D instead.

As you are getting the lens with the D90, try it and make your own judgement, if you are not happy then sell it.

I found my 18-105 to be a pretty decent lens, not much better than my old 18-55 but had VR and extra reach. For the money as part of the kit i think it is a steal. I now have the 18-70 which i feel is a much nicer lens but that is £300.

Unless you can go to that, or the 17-50 tamron or even the 17-55 nikon 2.8, i would stick with the d90 kit lens.

I find the 18-105VR a nice sharp lens. I also have a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 and a Tamron 9omm macro, and while it is obviously not as sharp as those, you have to pixel peep to see the difference. For the price you pay for it as a kit it is worth it IMO.
The Nikon 16-85VR is supposed to be very good, but pricey.
