As per subject I have a D90, when the tamron is attached the AF light does not always illuminate. When on auto it will every time no problem but when on aperture priority normally it doesnt, strange thing is it hunts back and fore instead.

Can anyone confirm if this is normal as i would of expected the AF light to assist and prevent the hunting?

Funny, I was using this same combination (D90 + Tamron 17-50mm) just yesterday, to do some self-portraits. When I started, the AF illuminator light was off, because I'd disabled it in the AF menu of the D90 (usually use that camera for wildlife stuff and don't want the light going off all the time ;)).

Once I switched "AF Illuminator" to "ON" in the menu, it worked every time and I was also shooting in "Aperture" mode (as I do most of the time).

So, it should work, yes. That said, I wasn't varying the camera position :|. If you are pointing the camera at something which the camera thinks is light enough not to need the AF assist light, then I guess that it won't use it . My assumption was that it only lit up if it was needed!?

EDIT: Have just checked the user manual; the light only comes on if you are in AF-S mode and, if you are in AF single point or dynamic focus modes, you have to have the centre AF point selected. Even then, it only fires if the light is low enough.

What a star! Cheers should of read the manual myself :bang:

I did think something wasnt right, why hunt when a quick AF light gives instant focus. I will test this tonight

Well, I learned something myself there - I didn't know that the AF assist only worked with the centre AF point in those modes .

Let us know how you get on ;).
