Funny, I was using this same combination (D90 + Tamron 17-50mm) just yesterday, to do some self-portraits. When I started, the AF illuminator light was off, because I'd disabled it in the AF menu of the D90 (usually use that camera for wildlife stuff and don't want the light going off all the time

).
Once I switched "AF Illuminator" to "ON" in the menu, it worked every time and I was also shooting in "Aperture" mode (as I do most of the time).
So, it
should work, yes. That said, I wasn't varying the camera position :|. If you are pointing the camera at something which the camera thinks is light enough not to need the AF assist light, then I guess that it won't use it . My assumption was that it only lit up if it was needed!?
EDIT: Have just checked the user manual; the light only comes on if you are in
AF-S mode
and, if you are in AF single point or dynamic focus modes,
you have to have the centre AF point selected. Even then, it only fires if the light is low enough.
