Yes
I'm new to DSLR's.

I have the oppurtunity to purchase a mint used D90 from a very good friend.

He is offering the body with kit lens, the 18-105 VR which he describes as a 'cracking' lens, or body only.

My problem is that a couple of reports I've read indicate that the 18-55 VR to be the better lens and lighter too.

Would I notice any difference as a general purpose walkaround lens?

Any advice welcome.

you can get a *VR* from "Bristol" ATM for £105.............

although VR is not CRITICAL at 55mm and below so you may pick up a 18-55 in the Classified for lots less

I liked the range of the 18-105 more but in all honesty you are better off going for the 18-70 which is a good kit lens. Just over £100 sh.

never used it but..
Ken Rockwell (c) says
"I suggest the 18-55 or 18-200 VR first depending on your budget. This 18-70 would be my third choice and dead last would be the heavy 17-55 2.8. My biggest beef with this 18-70 is the weird camming of the zoom. The wide focal lengths are crunched together making it hard to set the composition precisely. "

I really like teh 18-105 VR. It's sharp and has a really good focal range. It got a lot of use on my D90 despite the fact I had many 'better', more expensive lenses.

That said, if you don't need the length, I'd go for the Tamron 17-50 2.8.

All of the photos on my Flickr (link below), were taken
with a D90 and the 18-105.
Pretty good lens in my opinion.

:agree:

I have to say that it is a great walkabout lens and the extra reach over the 18-55 is really useful.

Cheers, Rob
