I've got half a mind to take a punt at this :

Obviously I'd send it off to canon for repair, which will be a "how long is a piece of string" job I guess? I saw a post somewhere where someone had the whole IS unit replaced and calibrated, cost was about £120, which surprised me as I thought it'd be more expensive.

Is it worth taking the risk ? Or is it just buying trouble ?
 
Parts missing, marks on the front element and doesn't extend smoothly and its been dropped so alignment will have taken a hit. if its cheap then could be worth a go but I would be wanting to pay less than £450 for that as the repair bill could be pretty high unless canon do a one price fixes all type repair? new parts, front element zoom bits and a service? I don't know.

OK front element marks don't really matter but the other bits could be an issue

That was my first thought. If it was repairable, I imagine they'd have done it and sold it on for a tidy profit. But they know someone will pay for it on ebay!

Yeah that did cross my mind too. Maybe it is only good for spares.
I guess its been dropped mount first, hence the damage to that end.

If the damage was quantifiable (e.g. AF motor doesn't work) you'd have a better idea of if it could be repaired.

Ah well, I'll think i will give it a miss.
 
Perhaps someone is going to buy it and mysteriously drop it and claim on their insurance for a new one or is that me being cynical ......
 
Sounds like a geat idea, unless the insurance company already have the serial number in which case your in the S--T.

Or am i just putting you off as its a great idea and i want to do it?:)

I would think there is a high probability they get insurance write-offs. In that case they could even sue you for fraud. You can still resell on ebay as faulty if repairs are not viable. To save the hassle I may instead wait for a mint one at £500 buy it now. It happens once in a year.
 
According to the seller, Canon havent been contacred about a repair.
 
This particular one is gone now, but as general advice I wouldn't touch things like this with a bargepole. We've had experience of 100-400s being damaged by customers and the repair bill being more than the lens would cost to buy NEW. If you don't know the precise condition of the lens, it really is a huge gamble.
