Dead Canon 1000D.

My Canon 1000D just seems to have died, working fine, switched off, made a cup of tea, came back to carry on, nothing!, checked the battery, seems OK, checked Memory card, OK, anybody had a similar problem with the 1000D.

Have you tried taking both batteries out for an hour or two (or overnight) and trying again?

It's an old trick for electrical items, but it's amazing the number of times it works.

The same thing happened to my D300. I tried everything, but ended up sending it off to Nikon for repair.

Apparently it was unavoidable component failure. Sometimes unfortunately electronic items just stop working.

Is your camera still under any kind of warranty?

Good idea, unfortuneately the backup battery on the 1000D is soldered to the board, not removeable.

No warranty, got it off here a few months ago, S/H while I was looking for a 40D,
No point in sending it to Canon, probably cost more to repair than its worth.

It's worth a try. I don't know about Canon, but Nikon give an estimated repair cost before they go ahead, and I'd imagine Canon would do the same. With Nikon it costs about £10 to get the camera sent back if you decide not to go ahead with the repair. At least that way you will know what is wrong and can maybe try an independent repair shop for a cheaper quote.
