Can anyone recommend a decent backpack, cheap but well padded (both for kit and my back!). Looking to hold a couple of bodies, a flash, a compact maybe and three or four lenses - also some odds and sods but they'll likey fit in the gaps.

Price is pretty important but also not after one that will fall off, let kit drop out, or is not at the least showerproof.

Hi - thanks for that but unless those sizes are imperial then I suspect it may be a little small.

Price is about right though :D

Arthur, I seriously doubt you're gonna get a well padded, comfortable bag big enough to take what you're including for £25

I'd say you need to double your budget to even get a padded bag that will adequately protect your gear..

What is your maximum budget?

I haven't managed to get any bag that is both comfortable and well padded to protect camera etc. for less than £120

Hmm. About £35 tops I guess - maybe I need to watch the classifieds then, I'm all spent out on new glass swapping from Canon to Nikon!

**edit - can someone delete this thread please? I would hate for anyone to think I am posting a wanted ad here :(

Try a Lowepro Primus AW- probably won't take enough equipment for you, but its about £40 and a bargin online! (£180 in Jessops)

Looks good, best price I can find is £55 - ish though?

hi arthur,
have a look on the ffordes website secondhand/ gadget bags, they have loads of ex demo stuff for knockdown money mostly last years jessops stock bought as job lot by ffordes.
I have had a few off them in recent months, lowepro orion trekker i purchased this morning, smallish ,but £15,a bargain ex demo.

i got a lowepro from PC World for £40 (compu day pack) it wont take the gear you need. But great padding and the most comfortable pack i own.
My point is the deals are out there but you'll have to hunt for them, Sadly its the wrong time of year to get a bargin from what i have seen.

Ffordes looks a great site... after a lot of faffing and looking and imagining kit in places it's never been I think I am going to stump for a Primus AW. Bit over the budget but ultimately it's the old crash helmet arguement isn't it? "How much are the contents worth?"

Now, if I can get a link to the ones about £40 from aligibbs mentioned above I'll be cooking!

Hi Arthur

Try ebay, I just bought a lowepro slingshot 200AW for £39
this is the one i bought
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Lowepro-SLINGSHOT-200-AW-200AW-SLR-Shoulder-Camera-Bag_W0QQitemZ270445628702QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CamerasPhoto_CameraAccessories_BagsCases_JN?hash=item3ef7d0cd1e

Now I know it will not be big enough for 2 bodies but there are some cracking deals on there at the mo specially if you donot mind waiting a couple of weeks for them to come from china(thats where my bag came from brand new), the 300 series might do what you want it too though.

You are right on the old crash helmet theory though, how much value do you put on your kit, to me get the best that suits you even if you have to wait a little bit to save for it

Good luck

Spike

!! Gone up already !! Now £43.60... My Memory has the Slingshot 100 at £45 delivered, not sure there is a great difference between the 100 and 200? (checked, about 1 1/2" is all)

Link for the Primus confirms £40 but out of stock :(

Still lookiong for one at the right price - watch this space!

So - looking all over the place (the world, even) to find a backpack and then someone 10 miles up the road drops a Kata in the Classifieds!

Looks like I am sorted now then - but thanks to all that have posted suggestions in this thread, it has been very illuminating and I got some great links as well!

You won't be disappointed; Kata really make awesome bags and they exude quality!

Your emoticons are sooo funny on the for sale thread in which you bought the bag

Just make sure Damien hasn't left any puppets in the bag, he seems to have a soft spot for them

:D As a sometime webmaster for a couple of sites you do tend to collect them. I have a page full but many are not really for children! I can send a link if you like but you will have to be... "selective" in your use of some of them.

Looking forward to getting my hands on the bag, maybe tonight if I am lucky! I now wish I hade kept the Tenba I sold a couple months ago but (waaaay) back then I did not anticipate a complete change in kit!

Arthur

gald you are sorted arthur.:) but as you said, lots of good suggestions here, useful info.
Those lowepro ex demos on ffordes site are a real bargain, the orion trekker i purchsed arrived this morning, well happy for £15.:)

Slightly sidetracking, but out of interest what made you switch from Canon to Nikon?

Well, I wanted a bigger LCD display and a more robust camera all round really. For the price I could afford, the D1x fit the bill.
