Decided to trade my D3s for a New D800e

Why do people think printing huge is the only reason to have a D800?? It has that amazing crop-ability too, and in general, is a great camera besides having 36mp.
 
I had Nikon gear since 2005 and Nikon d3s from 2009.
I was so close to going to d800 but I bought for test canon 5d mkii , after 1 week of test 5d mkii I decided sell my d3s and buy 5d mkiii. Now after 3-4 months I m sure about my decision... Last weekend I was in forest to photograph waterfalls... Colours was perfect straid from the camera... Green is green , black is black no more yellowish greenish tint from Nikon...
Try test any canon before you buy Nikon d800... Just for perfect colours......
 
I agree but colours... Colours are important in digital photography ...

If it is what you like than that is good.But to go from a D3s which is a sports /action camera to a Canon 5d mkii which is a landscape /wedding camera is a complete change of camera design so not such a good comparison.
 
Guys I know Nikon and I love it from last 8 years.
Perfect cameras , perfect solid build , raw files with great shadow recovery...
I tried 5d mkii by one week and decided move to canon...
1. Colours straid from the camera in jepgs and raw are 90% correct.
2.raw files are ready to use ( to export jpg,tif) in 95-99%.
3. Skin tones and human skin texture perfect... Canon no blow out the skin..? Less details in shadows more details in highlights (skin)
4. Live mode preview with rules of thirds guidelines
5.better prints more accurate colours again straid from the camera on my Epson 1500w a3
6. Less time with post processing
Minuses -
- Nikon has better lenses not all but I think build quality and optical Nikon are better
- camera body build is better in Nikon more solid and not easy to damage like canon
- no shot keys for format memory card
- I think focus is better in Nikon but canon is good as well

But colours are 100% in canon you can trust to camera and camera raw white balance profiles after you take picture... You don't worrie about colours in canon...

I don't worry about colours in Nikon either........they are better than Canon Period??
Now getting back on topic I have decided to get the D800e as a 2nd or 3rd body to my D4s........I will get it when I get home from Nigeria in 2 weeks time
 
I think d800e is more sharp. If you have enough money go for d800e but is no good for video.

2 bodies

IMHO, logic would dictate that if you have two bodies, one as a back up to the other, that they be both the same. You will then have a seamless transition from one to the other not only in terms of the UI and controls etc, but also in the “feel” of the camera in your hands.

The most cost effective solution, whilst retaining top quality, would be 2 x D800 bodies, (E or normal), OR, as you have a D4S, two D4S bodies.

As you have the budget, and as you have a D4S, surely another D4S is the way to go and I would think that even keeping the D3S alongside the D4S is better than throwing a D800E into the mix.

Alternatives are:

1). Keep what you have which would seem to many as a really good option.

2). Buy another D4S and sell the D3S … same "net cost" as throwing a D800E into the mix.

3). Sell what you have and buy 2 x D880E’s and two grips.

I know that you are keen on “bird” images; the DX D7100 will give you 50% extra reach with more pixels on the image than the FX sensor in the D800 used in DX mode will give and you also have the option of a further in camera x 1.3 crop if you want to keep files sizes lower. DX does not necessarily mean a lower quality or a cheaper body.
If you want to throw another body into the mix that you have consider the D7100 as it may be a better and certainly a cheaper option than the D800 and it is a camera that you could use specifically for birding, albeit with a (more) different UI versus the D4S than the D800E has.

A lot of us would welcome having your “problem” - tough times

Thanks for the input Bill but I am getting a D800e for my trip to the UK regardless of if I use it as a second body or not. I plan to use it for portrait/landscape while in Scotland and have my D4s with 300mm f2.8 ready to go if I see any birds/wildlife.............I may get a D7100 later when I get the longer telephoto either 600/800........as you know I hate TC's
I was originally going to take my Leica gear with me to Scotland but I have tried traveling with two systems before and its a nightmare so Leica is getting to stay in the dry box, and the kind of trip we are doing in Scotland is drive stop take a picture, drive stop take a picture so no worry lugging 40lbs of Nikon gear around with me
 
That's what I thought Neil, you'd made your mind up …. and I could not see you changing it ………. ever thought about Canon, (sorry just a joke)

Are you carrying all your photo gear as carry on - the 300mm f2.8VR included …… this is something that now worries me because of the size and cabin bag weight limit ……. a good photo back pack comes in at almost 4 kg empty and just about gets in under the size restrictions
 
Bill I am taking a hard case with my D4s, 300mm, 70/200 and 17/35 my wife is taking the D800 and her D600 24/70 and 24 prime she will also check in all the filters chargers tripods etc as she is meeting me in Dubai as I will be coming from work in Nigeria........... We are flying business so I think we can hand carry up to 15 kg each so should be ok
 
Nigeria …… Nigeria ……… was never my favourite place - I was there is the mid 1970's ……… unfortunately Bar Beach executions were the favourite weekend pastime for some!!
