Does anybody know of good sites to advertise photo equipment for sale?

I know Talk Photography has one, but I'm new here and don't want to wait two months until I can post. Would rather avoid eBay fees and Gumtree not specialised enough.

Any suggestions for places to advertise?

I think you'll find that most forums / advertising sites will have a time delay before being able to post an advert and / or fees to pay.

Doesn't leave a lot of options really , but is 2 months REALLY a long time??

Patience young man, Patience…….Good things come to those who wait! ;)

Asha, yes, two months is a long time. I have a bunch of Nikon gear I want to sell as I'm going over to Canon for various reasons and I don't want to be hanging around that long. I would happily pay on here, but there is no option. Not only is it two months on here, but a bunch of posts too and I don't want to stick up 30 or so futile posts just to reach that target, something a spammer would happily do.

Unfortunately I'm not on Facebook or Flickr so they are out.

You've 2 months to make 30 posts, hardly need to be a spammer to do that. You could always start with why you're moving from Canon to Nikon and you could always introduce yourself in the welcome forum.

Better just using eBay or one of the trade dealers like mpb or WEX, the classifieds section on here doesn’t snt have a huge amount of activity these days

Here in Ireland we have a site called simply 'Adverts.ie' and it works great. It's a bit like Gumtree but much more secure, it works on a rating system similar to ebay and accounts are verified via phone and email. There must be something like this in the UK? Otherwise as Tommy suggests, take a bit of a hit in value, as speed seems important to you, and use MPB or WEX.

So you basically want to use the forum to sell your old kit and not contribute in any meaningful way? THAT's exactly what the 30 posts and 2 months is designed to stop.

Looking at OP's other posts seems he's just decided to get back into photography, maybe it's not his intention to abuse this site in any way whatsoever? Benefit of the doubt and all that

If he is just getting back into photography after 30 years away, how come he has all this top end Nikon gear to sell?

As said there are a fair few photography buy/sell groups on Facebook, so could always join purely for the purposes of selling the equipment and then once sold and everyone is happy could deactivate your account.

Gumtree may not be specialised but it does have a big reach and is free. Ebay also an option if you remember there is a commission.

As much as I hate it, I’ve had more success on eBay than anywhere else. Yes you pay fees but these can be minimised if you wait for the £1 FVF promotions as TGphoto mentioned above.

I still list kit for sale here as sometimes you get lucky but if you’re after a quick sale, you’re better off on eBay or take a hit and trade it in with the likes of MPB et al.

Thanks for this. That's exactly what it is. Just so happens my first post was about equipment I just bought. So, yes, I'll be on here as a regular, if I don't get flamed down first.

Just bought it and after a month decided the EOS has a more pleasing 'look' and, turns out there are just a few other things I prefer about Canon. Radio flash for example. Yes, I know you can buy third party, but I like to stick with the same brand as the camera.

Wait until there is a £1 selling fee offer on eBay.

You’ll pay a £1 fee and then 3.4% + 20p PayPal I think it is.

Never really understood how this works as I often get emails with this deal, but as it is only for a day is that for the 'day' the item ends, or the 'day' you list it?

The promotion normally runs for a few days. As long as you list the items within the promotional period, you only pay £1 regardless of when they sell (I think max of 30 days to sell).

Have you tried MPB. I’ve found the prices offered to be fair and if you’re in a hurry, it’s a quick and easy way to off load gear.

Thanks, really good to know.

I'm looking at them for some used Canon gear. EOS 5D MKiii, Speedlite, transmitter, 70-200 f2.8 and a 24-70 f2.8. Might ask them what they'd give for my D3s, which is mint and only 10k shutter count. Also have Nikon Speedlight and few lenses to offload, also mint. Just listed them on Gumtree though, but will phone MPB tomorrow and see what they say. I figured they'd give me half what they are worth though and, these days, with eBay I can't really see the point in giving it away for peanuts to a dealer when the whole world is watching eBay. I know I said I wanted to avoid eBay fees, but 13 percent (inc paypal) is better than getting half from a dealer. But, I'll call to at least dismiss it.

I think you’ll be surprised. I’ve found d their prices to be fair.
Sure you will probably get a bit more selling private, but then you have risk and shipping and insurance costs to worry about.

Ebay is a minefield especially for the seller, be very careful.
You could also try WEX, they give the funds as credit, but if you want more kit it might suit.

I'm pretty seasoned on eBay etc. Will deffo check out MPB though. Not sure if I'll call Camera Jungle as they are Jessops and they only ever used to give about half.

Yup.

Hands up! I apologise to Nigel for my comment above, especially having seen his helpful contributions in another thread. I hope he sticks around despite my rather rude welcome to the forum.

Sounds like a part exchange could be the best route rather than selling, possibly bit by bit, and buying. Worth a look anyway if you kno what you want. :)

True. First up, redhed17, sorry about the whole Man City thing, boy was that bloody close. Though I'm a Gooner, I have a soft spot for the Reds and wanted them to win. Ok, onwards and upwards, yes, part ex could be good, thing is, the usual shops only have 'well used' 5D MK3's at the moment with high shutter counts. Something will come up in a few weeks though, I'm sure, and it will take me that long to sell my existing Nikon gear.

At the end of the day you have to be realistic with your pricing with whatever your selling . The marketplace has gone stupid of late ,with a lot of cameras lenses on e.bay being either listed at a high start price or a very high buy it now price often far more than some dealers are selling at and including warranty .. beats me how there getting there prices but they are ... I.e one lens I was after around Xmas time was going used for circa £400 in vgc with warranty from dealers and now I can’t find one much under £600 anywhere retail or private

It's been suggested that these "over the top" prices are money laundering scams. An outsider attempting to buy will just be told: "sorry it's already sold". After all the anti-money laundering training I had to do over the years I can well believe it.

Ebay £1 listing is the way to go. I sold 2 cameras for £1300 and paid £2 +paypal fees.

Was lucky to get a £1 listing four-day deal and sold all the stuff for really good price. More than happy with what I got for it all. Thanks all.

I always use £1 fee with ebay, I use to sell on here more but a lot of people haggle too hard and I don't like this.
What I can't stand anymore is the paypal fee and there's no really any way round this!
3.4% for doing what appart holding my money for a week until I provide them with a copy of my passport and electricity bill while I've been usign them for them and already add a "verified" account.

Facebook group no way, only my local add group where I meet local people.
