Developer - Stock vs Dilution

I was just wondering is there big differences in outcome when you use stock vs dilutions (1-1/1-2/1-3) - other than saving developer - does it result in more contrasty images if you use stock solution?

I've read some places recommend it for slowing development times down to a more manageable time. A development <5 mins means that the time taken to pour the solution into and out of the tank becomes a more sizeable percentage of development time and this is harder to control than the time its just in the tank.
