Hi,

What is the difference between a kit lens say Canon 17-85 is. and the 17-85 is usm ?

Is it just the usm motor or is there more to it ?

There is only one version of the 17-85 and it has IS and USM.
Do you mean the difference between it and the 18-55IS ?
 
Yep, like hash said - there is only one version of the 17-85mm, and that's with both IS and USM.

Thanks for the response.
I am looking to upgrade std lens and have been looking at this one for around 380 quid, However I have seen new 50 D with this lens for 770 quid, therefore the camera is only 390 quid and I'd get a fair chunk of that back if I sold my old camera.
Hence I wondered if it were a cheaper version that is sold with the camera.

So now Iam wondering whether to upgrade both ?
[present camera is a 400 D]

If you've seen the 50D bundled with a 17-85IS USM for £770, that's a cracking deal.
A quick look on cambuster shows the cheapest UK deal to be £899.
The 50D is a very good body and the 17-85IS USM isn't a bad lens and would be a good replacement for the 18-55.
On a 400D I would guess the going rate is £200-250 so overall you would do quite well.

The 17-85IS USM lens isn't perfect but as a general walkabout lens, it kept me happy for about a year.
