DIY sharpness test

have been given a lens for my Canon A-1.....not too impressed

but being hand-held - prob my fault

how can i do some simple 'sharpness' tests

and what criteria should i look for

Tripod, point camera at something taht is know to be sharp, for example a steel ruler is great target, lots of details and if it's a bit battered like mine it's got lots of lovely fine scratches that you can study. Plastic sticky labels are good too (not paper faced stuff as paper bleeds and is't half as sharp)

Point, focus as accurately as you can and then review the results. Try a known good lens as well I've been doing pretty much this all morning with my Minolta 45mm f2 vs Zuiko 50mm f1.8. (decinding on a cheap macro setup)

as in what...a 100% crop

what can i have to compare it too ...all a bit suggestive i feel
