Yes
I've been forced to move loads of domains in a hurry because Lycos went bust.... I used their recommended auto transfer method, after only having 3 days to respond or lose the lot. :bang:

My new domain holder has an odd method of pointing domains called an 'A record' ...just one entry for a new IP. ...which I have entered as my server numbers, its the same numbers as I'd use for my first server with the usual IP and NS method.

I’ve been informed by my new holder that this is indeed the correct way to point my domains and all should be fine.

Only it doesn't seem to be working. :(

My server people say its not pointing...
My pointing people say it is...

For example. www.optiflowlondon.co.uk it goes but doesn't find.

Anyone shed any light on what the hacks going on please?

...is 'A Record' suitable for doing this, what actually is it?

:help:

I get a message saying "This domain is now reserved. As of now no content has been uploaded"

One thing to remember is that DNS changes can take up to 24h to take effect... and yes an A record (or a CNAME pointing to an A record) is right.

B.

Hi Ben Cheers, so A record is okay for pointing ... phew ...I don't understand the CNAME bit ...don't think I have that option in my CP, will that be a problem do you think.

You get that message how Ben?

If you click on my link does it not take you too my server?.. that means the domain is pointing doesn't it?

Its been 40 plus hours now..

The domain is pointing to the route of the server.. or somesuch...din't understand.

the site is here still.

I got the message by putting http://www.optiflowlondon.co.uk into the web browser...

Looking at the domain information in the global DNS I get
Code:
     Domain name:
         optiflowlondon.co.uk
     Registrant:
         optiflow
     Registrant type:

     Registrant's address:

Which you should be able to tell if that is you (or who you expect it to be) - the address seems reasonable for your business...

CNAME you shouldn't have to worry about.

If STRATO are your web hosts, then yes the pointing is right but you haven't uploaded the website yet.

B.

Thanks for going through all that Ben ...yeah, that’s correct... and the servers are Stratos named servers...what I need is for the A record to work and re-point my domain at my server....

Maybe I just need to wait longer then ... excuse me if that it Ben ...been waiting for days now anyway.

I've got confused about the fact that optiflowlondon.co.uk seems to be pointing at an apache server ... which I use ... I thought it should just come up with a 'cannot find page' if my domains not pointing, .hmmm..

Just got this from my server people

Hello,

Your information/website is not pointing to our servers. Please see the following DNS report for your domain:

http://leafdns.com/index.cgi?testid=3C9539AE

Per the above DNS report, optiflowlondon.co.uk is using another company's DNS and is actively pointing to a server outside of our support scope. The only thing we have on your domain is a DNS a record and some files but again, your domain isn't pointing to us. Are you using Strato for DNS services, hosting services, or domain registration services? I am trying to better understand what setup you have exactly.

Thanks!

Regards,

Its the bit in bold I'm now worried about ... they're mentioning an a record , but also say its not pointing. :gag:

Confused again now

:help: Adam

Well the A record appears to be pointing at 81.169.145.69... if that is the IP address of your server then everything is going as it should be (from a DNS perspective) if it isn't then you need to update the A record with your servers IP address.

I thought it should just come up with a 'cannot find page' if my domains not pointing

Yes it would come up with a "domain not found" if the DNS was incorrect (the actual page displayed in your webbrowser depends on your ISP/DNS setup)

So, in summary if 81.169.145.69 is your server then you need to upload your content to it and everything will just work ™. Famous last words I know!

OK Posts that cross in the night and all that.

I can't quite get what is wrong.... I am starting to sound like a confused German support chap :D :D :D

Your domain is registered... so an nslookup resolves it to a rzone.de IP address, presumably one of the Stratos servers.

A ping to the ip address returns in about 100ms or less.

A Pathping returns the route as expected.

Entering http://81.169.145.69 returns 404 in a webbrowser, indicating that the server has no http files (or at least index.htm or index.dat)

Entering http://www.optiflowlondon.co.uk/ into a browser returns the Hosting service's version of the 404 - again indicating you haven't manages to upload any data yet or at least you haven't managed to upload it to the right place....

Dunno if that helps.

B.

Ok..... so you have an IP address of 85.13.207.81 - where did that one come from?

DNS points at the Strato server (81.169.145.69) not that IP address so all web requests will go to Germany not Stratford (where the 85 address is registered)

B.

Soz Ben, probably me confusing you....

Strato are my domain holders (for want of a better name) and by default all domains point to them temporarily whilst being held ... the New IP is my server in the Uk where my actual websites are hosted.

I've used the 'A record' to point the held domains at websites on my server. ...

It just doesn't seem to be working yet. :gag:

Loos like I'll have to wait (after seeing your tests).... But I fear its worse than it seems, as I've waited a few days already.

No problem... There had to be something silly wrong - after all it is really quite a simple thing and simple things always take the longest to sort out.

Hope it all works as expected now.

Is working for me, from the link in your original post, you may have to clear your browsers cache

This one?

if yes that works too
what browser do you use? if FF holding down the shift key then refresh i believe should clear the cache

Yeah that’s the working direct link Mark, thanks for trying though.

I think control F5 is the universal cache clear method, works with all browsers etc.

Its kinda sorted now btw...looks as if its just down to the wrong IP numbers being used... I'll know in 24 hours after the new ones propagate through the interweb.
