do I need to test lens

just got a Canon 85mm f/1.8,new to this,so do I need to test it for how sharp a copy I've got? I've read a few posts saying some lenses are better than others,if I need to check it,whats the best way? is it the ruler test,or is there a better way? if the ruler test is the best one,whats involved? cheers

Just go and shoot, how on earth is a ruler going to tell you anything other than a front or back focus issue, just go shoot and enjoy and dont look for problems or you'll sure as hell find some.
