does a 10yr old 70-200 L f2.8 IS MK1 still cut it?

Looking at lens'

is an 'old' 70-200 f2.8 mk1 L series as good as it was with the advance in technologies, (about £800 2nd hand).

compare it to a modern new Tamron 70-200 vc f:2.8 that you can buy at £1099 new with 5 yr warranty?

The Tamron is a fine lens and arguably sharper than the Canon. But I think you'd be hard pushed to tell the difference in the real world.

If I already owned a MkI I wouldn't be rushing out to buy the Tamron but if I was buying either I don't know which I would choose.

One possible point for consideration is how long Canon will support the MkI lens with regards to servicing and spares. e.g. They have committed to support the MkI 500 f4 IS until 2018 but after that no guarantee of support.

you've made a few valid points, I anchor towards the Tamron now, VFM and its' size/weight over a MKI canon.
