DSLR Vs Phone Camera ?

Yes
I was reading an article the other day about a new phone coming out or is out called the Nokia Pureview. Now in this article the general feeling seemed to be that although the DSLR had the flexibility of different lenses and of course being able to change settings etc. The Pureview photo quality was just about on par with the DSLR. (The DSLR they used was the Nikon D800)

Now if this is correct (might be rubbish article) I reckon Nikon need a bomb up their arse. How can a small phone with an even smaller lens and I suppose sensor, possible take on the likes of the D800 and even be in the same county. Surly with all that size to play with and all the processing power and sensor size the Nikon (or nearly any other DSLR) should wipe the floor of any camera phone.

This is not the article I read as it was in mag in a shop but a quick google search got me THIS

I cant see this being true. I cant see how a small sensor & puny lens can create the same iq as a dslr. I would put this down to advertising hype. How well would the phone camera work in less than perfect conditions:shrug:we all have to shoot in bad light etc.

Really struggle to see how this is possible, but then when it comes down to the clever Japs, what do i know:shrug:

Well I find it hard to fathom and if I was one of the big camera manufacturers I would be embarrassed

Maybe need one of these instead of my D90 for next wedding

The Nokia 808 has a pretty decent size sensor (bigger than most compacts IIRC) and lens array. It's basically a high end compact with a phone attached.

looking at the shots, the full frame captures a lot more better resolved details. looking at DPreview article, the 100% crops are not great at all. whereas i am perfectly happy to do 100% crop on most of my photos, including up to ISO 6400.

yes PureView is almost as good, it's like saying a M5 is almost as good as a Ferrari, so why bother invest in such specialised car?

i think the trick with PureView's 41MP sensor is that you should shoot it at 10.25MP. i have shot my 21MP 5D2 at 5MP RAW files and the result is astonishing. any lens limitations (such as CA and lack of sharpness wide open) are gone.

Read this and see if you are still laughing.

That's a website normally dedicated to large format film and medium format digital.

If you ditch the phone side of it you have a really impressive pocket camera.
If the price was comparable with the G12 etc, I'd buy one.
Nikon and Samsung have already produced cameras with phone operating systems.
Just hope Nokia have the guts to make this one!

This is pretty old news. I'm sure there is a thread on here about this phone from around 6 months ago. I seem to recall that although it has an immense camera they were planning on the phone using the tired old Symbian platform which would pretty much leave it dead in the water if it ever was to come out.

The impending Nokia Lumia 920 uses Pureview technology in it's camera (it uses optical stabilisation), an interesting feature in itself.

The Pureview is out in the US, but is a very niche product, especially as mentioned above - it's running Symbian.

The Nokia Lumia IS would be a lot more convincing if the advert for it hadn't been shot by someone with a DSLR, as blown up a couple of days ago!

I think good.... even reasonable quality cameras on phones can be really good devices to challenge you and develop your photography skills - I know with my Galaxy SII I've started really working my phone camera a lot harder!
