Might have been worth trying it with fill flash as the light was low.

Thanks guys. Never really used fill-in flash before, but I'll bear that in mind

There are a few good flash settings on the cam that give various lighting effects - have a play around with them so you get familiar with what each of them does ) They're very handy sometimes for portrait photos where you don't want that 'artificially lighted' look.
