Dust or Mark on Mirror

Yes
I have just noticed that I have a small speck on my mirror, I have used the rocket blower which has not worked. I can see it in the view finder and also actually when looking at the mirror itself, its very annoying.

To get rid of it should I use my fine micro cloth very lightly?

Mirror marks don't in my experience show sharply in viewfinder. it may be a reflection
of the very common dirt on focusing screen which is best left alone in my opinion.

^^^ True. Dust is a fact of life with any interchangeable lens camera.

If you can see it through the viewfinder, it's on the underside of the focusing screen, above the mirror. I just leave it - rather there than blow it around so it gets on the snesor.

If it's on the final image, it's on the sensor.

Anything on the mirror is very hard to detect, and anything on or in the lens is completely invisible.

oh dear

made a massive mistake!!!

I thought I would have a go and trying to clean behind my focus screen on my A200 (before I read to leave it alone) as I have had some dust on it for a while, got my tweezers and then pushed out metal clip which went flying and my tweezers caught the focus screen therefore scratching it ARGGGG, I know its a stupid thing to do! I should have left well alone!! I'll never do that again.

I managed to put it back together but no when looking through my view piece it has black marks/spots on due the scratches and dust, I now need to get a new one or send my camera off to be repaired!!

What should I do? Send it off to Sony and get them to fit a replacement one or leave it as it does not effect photos.

It does not show on any of the photos the good thing is that it does not show on any of the photos I take, just through the view piece which is well annoying.

if the marks/scratches ruin your enjoyment of the camera or make it too hard to use then you might want to consider getting it repaired.

remember, if you get it repaired by Sony there is a good chance that it might cost almost as much as a new camera (with shipping/parts and labour). i'd ring them up and ask for a quote.

Some local independent camera shops undertake repairs like this so check if there is one near you. Otherwise you might just have to put this one down to experience and never do it again!

so you're not going to get much change from £150... cheaper than a new camera body.

i feel for you, i really do - but it could have been worse, you could have done it to a 800 or 1500 camera!

I know, I suppose that I could just live with it as it does not effect the final photos. I am just anoyed with myself, wish I never did it.

I have emailed a couple of local camera repairers in the local area to see if they are cheaper.

Also its one of them things too that if I am going to spend £150 I might as well save up and buy an A700 or A900.

i did read (can't remember if it was here or on another forum) some guy had completely obliterated the mirror on his few week old canon 450D by trying remove a bit of dust from the mirror with an ear bud or something equally abrasive.

these things happen, don't be too hard on yourself... like i said... it could have been much worse, and in any case... look on the positives... you'll be getting a new A700/A900 sooner than expected!

Sounds like a great excuse to upgrade ;)

Could you get a new focusing screen and fit it yourself?

I would like to get a new one and fit it myself, I am sure I would do better job now, however can't find anywhere that sells one. I think I might have to live with it until upgrade time. I am really stuck for ideas on what to do, hopefully the local camera repair people might be able to do it for me.

Just out of interest what would be next logical upgrade? I would like to stay in Sony family

The a700 or 900?.
