Hi

I've been asked to help a family member buy some mini DVD's for their camcorder, reading up and it supports:

DVDR, DVD-R DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW

I believe there are various benefits of certain types of disks? - can anyone offer any generic advice of whats the best format to go for? - they're not into any video editing or anything like that....

Only RW will allow you to 'wipe' the disc and use it again as an effectively 'new' and unused DVD, but they are usually around the same price per disc as it would cost to buy a few Rs which are a one-time only usage. You trade off the reusable factor but you get faster write speeds and a cheaper PPU.

It would be more sensible, in my opinion at least, to go for a reputable brand that is both reliable and of high quality which works in the DVD camcorder. Figure out if a RW disc is more useful than a R disc and go from there.
