Perhaps you could try using the search function, it's a highly discussed lens/situation.
Compared to your kit lens? It's very, very good indeed. Constant aperture, useful focal range, although 24mm isn't very wide on your crop sensor, but perhaps that won't be a problem for you.

It's also inferior in pretty much every way you can think of.....build quality, IS, colour, contrast, AF speed, no constant aperture, sharpness, etc.....while the 17-85mm is better than the kit lens, it's not in the same league as either the 24-105mm, or the 17-55mm!!

It's a question of whether the 24-105L is wide enough for your needs on a cropped body ?
Another vote for the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS though.
I agree that the EF-S 17-85mm F4-5.6 IS USM isn't in the same league. I had it as a kit lens on a 40D and whilst not the best - it did have a really nice range.
If the range appeals then the EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is also worth a look.
The 17-55 and 24-105 will certainly hold their value the most if that matters to you.

I have both, having upgraded from 17-85 to 24-105.
Do I miss the 17-24mm range? Yes, but I also got a 10-22EFS which takes care of that although you do have to change more.
It depends what you are shooting though as going from 85-105 on a crop gives you an equivalent 168 instead of 136 at the tele end so it depends what you shoot.
As has been said sharpness and build quality of the 24-105 is also much better - with weather sealing if that matters to you; and the 50D has average sealing I believe. There is also no 'zoom creep' when walking around which used to bug me.
