EF 24-70mm query

Presently using a 5D Mk1, I've a few Canon lenses being; 50mm f/1.8, 85mm 1.8, 70-200mm f/2.8L (Mk1).


In the near future I'm going to need a wide angle lens for landscape photography, would the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L be a good purchase? I want to keep two or three lenses (max), keep things simple.

Advice appreciated.
 
For landscapes, I'd imagine the 17-40mm f/4L would suit better, but wait for someone with experience of both to chime in :)
 
The EF 24-70mm f2.8L is a lovely lens Peter and obviously has the advantage of f2.8 compared to the other popular lens - the image stabilised EF 24-105 f4.

At 24mm both are traditionaly considered 'wide' on full frame but they're not really that wide.

Is this lens simply for landscapes or would you also like to use it for general use ?

If it's simply landscapes then 17-40 is great if the wider shorter range suits your style as IS and f4 aren't likely to limit you with a tripod.

I guess it's a case of budget and whether or not you want a landscape lens that doubles as a general walkabout lens - in which case it's down to whether your general walkabout stuff benefits most from the f2.8 of the 24-70 or the added reach and IS of the 24-105.

I found the 17-40mm just to wide on FF most of the time - if you've had a 10-20mm on a crop sensor that's the type of range you'll have.
 
The 17-40 would be a better bet in my opinion for landscapes, and has the advantage of being much cheaper !
The 24-70 is a fantastic lens, better suited to general use but heavy and expensive, and the 24-105 is in the middle price-wise and is the one I use most of the time as it suits my needs best. You may be able to get both a 17-40 and 24-105 secondhand for not much more than a new 24-70...

You'll probably find the 17-40 too short for your general stuff which is a shame.

Perhaps (as said) you could get a 17-40 and 24-105 for the cost of the 24-70 but that then boils down to how much you want that f2.8

17-40L is a fantastic lens for landscape work, but I must agree it might be a bit to short for general walkabout lens. I think you can buy second hand one for £450 and new for £600.
 
I have to agree with that the 17-40 is better suited for lanscapes in my own opinion, i own both the 17-40 and the 24-70 2.8 and if shooting landscapes the 17-40 is the glass i take with me, my 24-70 is my general walk around and portrait lens.
