Correct, all the Canon Eos cameras Film and Digital have the same EF mount. The difference lies in the protrusion of the rear element at the collar of some EF-s lenses, though not all, I think some Sigmas for instance do allow it without the mirror striking the rear element but still with the vignette (needs verification).
Anyway bottom line as per original question is that the 17-55 f2.8 wont work. Some brave souls have apparently got it to work (still vignetting though) by dismantling the lens and removing the plastic flange inside the metal lens collar of the 17-55 to allow the mirror to miss the rear element as long as you dont zoom back between the 17-20mm range (if you do the mirror clips the rear element)

I mean, why bother ? . In my book that is just not worth the risk and I would avoid any such workaround at all costs.
