Hi does anyone know if the Elinchrom D lites 400 400 can be used with film or are they only for digital.

No reason why they can't be used with film cameras that I can think of 
They accept standard sync cables and the power is adjustable to meet the required power levels for the shoot.
The only other thing your sure to need is a good quality light meter. Digital users could happily go without this as they can review an image and delete it and try again.....thats costly on 35mm and
on medium format.
