Enlighten me with this 82mm thing please

I am thick but I have a no of pro lenses with 77mm filter size and some nice 77mm filters and might want to buy some more lenses or upgrade but we now seem to have moved onto the 82mm filter size- tamron and canon have both announced 24-70 lenses with 82mm filters. Is it the start of a trend?

The canon used to be a 77mm thread so I'm unclear why the mkII needs to be 82mm? It can't be to let in more light- both were f2.8. Optical improvement? Maybe but they really couldn't keep it 77mm?- managed okay with the 70-200mkII?

It's not like they had to make it bigger to incorporate IS as it doesn't have it.

Tamron should also get their act together with sizing, getting as bad as Sigma who chuck any old size out depending on what glass has been left cut on the floor

So, is there any real logic or is it just different because they can and can also sell more accessories for those that don't like stepping rings unless last resort?

It reduces the weight of the lens, there's a mathamatical ratio for the glass thickness/diameter in the lens to the focal length but I cant remember it.

No idea but then again I'm not a screw-in filter user as I don't believe in putting another piece of glass between the lens and the subject. On the rare times that I do use filters then they are square cokin versions and the cost of an adaptor doesn't really count.

I use filters a fair bit- CPL, ND and ND Grads and sometimes I'll get the full Lee kit out but other times it's much easier just to have a couple of screw-in's- lighter and quicker and we aren't talking ebay specials.

Well I wouldn't dream of sticking a Cokin filter between lens and subject, I'd rather put a piece of glass between.
If I use filters it will be a Lee pro glass square filter in a holder, nothing less.
What's the point of an expensive lump of glass with a bit of sh#t in front of it?
