EOS 500d Software CD-ROM

We just bought a canon 500D off Amazon and they didn't send the CD-ROM disc with it, we have emailed them telling them we need it sent to us and they said we have to send the camera back as they're out of stock, we do not want to send it back, just need the software for getting the pictures onto the computer and software etc.

Is there any way to get this online without paying for it as we already have the camera?

Get yourself a card reader, it's a far better way of offloading your pictures. Then get youself a copy of faststone image viewer available free from faststone.org.

You can't download the software, you can only get the upgrades on line.

Amazon can't get just the disks they come as part of the boxed set with the camera.

You camera should have come with disks unless it's second hand

Just out of interets where do you live.

was the box sealed with the factory seals?

this seems very strange to me - it could have been a used/returned camera. do check that out.

as for the software... is can all be downloaded from the canon website.

you might need to sign up for an account, but the main utilities you will need are:

Digital Photo Professional and EOS utility - I can't remember, but i think you just have to type in your camera serial number to download it... but that might have changed now.

Edit: Chris... you might be right... it might need the original disk when you first install it from the web. Such a long time since I did it, i can't remember... i only needed to download an 'upgrade' for Windows 7 64bit.

hmmm. strange you didn't get the disks though.

That's OK if all you want to do is download your images to a computer and look at them, but the software disks also give you Digital Portrait Professional (DPP) which is Canon's software for processing the RAW files from their cameras, as well as Eos Utility which allows you to update a camera with data that is written to each image, such as your name for copyright purposes. Eos Utility also allows you to do remote tethered shooting, using a PC or laptop to control the camera.
 
Thanks for all the replies. We live near Blackpool. Have been out today taking pictures and now this. We don't want to send the camera back as there's nothing wrong with it. And yes we did want all the software that the original canon disc comes with.

The camera was described as 'new' on the website and we think it was sealed though can't fully remember. :(

I agree Derek but I never use DPP I use faststone and CS5.

If there are no origional disks it sounds odd but I'm just thinking about getting our new member up and running fairly quickly.

You don't need DPP if your shooting in jpeg anyway.

As for EOS Utility I agree but again for a begginer is it important.
 
The CD's are sealed in the box along with the paperwork, if it was new they should have been in there.

If they weren't than they may have slyly re sealed the box with an ex demo or used camera in it or had to add a lens that they may have removed to go with another camera.

I would send it back but insist they reimburse you for the costs of doing so.
If they are using a good courier they may even be able to do a door step swap, where you package up the one to go back and give it to the driver as he drops of the new one.

If you do go for the replacement make sure its a factory sealed box
 
There is still an official download of the Full Canon DPP software (version 1) available from Canon Japan and once this is installed you can then download and run the latest updates from Canon UK/Europe and they will install ok because you have ver1 on your machine.

That should get you all the software that would have come with the camera anyway :thumbs: Job Done.

I have never understood the Canon policy on there software download needing an original disc, it just seems self defeating and will put people off buying second hand Canon gear. :cuckoo:
