Eos 7D or 5D lens advice

Please bare with me as I'm pretty new to DSLR's coming from a digital compact and my old but much loved EOS3. At the moment I am considering either 7D or 5Dmk2 but I'm slightly confused about which range of lenses I can use with each, Am I right in saying you cannot use the EF-S range with the 5D? Basically not sure if I can stretch to the 5 yet but may want to go full frame at some point and don't want a bag of unsuitable lenses. What are the rules regarding which lenses go with which size sensor?

You are spot on there.

EF-S lenses can only be used with the crop sensor cameras whereas EF lenses can be used by both.

Yeah stick with EF if you're looking to move to FF in the future.

The only slight 'problem' with doing this is that the two most common 'walkabout' EF lenses are the 24-70 and 24-105 but 24mm isn't very wide on a crop camera so, with the 7D, you may find you want or need something like the 10-22 to cover wider shots.

*EF lenses will fit both crop (7D, 60D etc) and full frame (5D etc) cameras.
*EF-S are for crop only (7D, 60D etc) only.

I owned a 5D MKII for two weeks before "upgrading" to a 7D. I really could not get on with the AF of the 5D which felt prehistoric compared to the 7D. If you go for the 7D I highly recommend the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens, coupled with an EF 70-200mm F/4L IS. Both are super sharp and will hold their values well. Should you upgrade to FF in the future you will not lose much on the 17-55 f/2.8.

I am probably in the minority, but I prefer the 7D + 17-55 F/2,8 to a 5D II + 24-105L F/4 combo. The 5D was great at shooting immobile objects but the AF just couldn't handle rapid movement in my hands. Perhaps I had a dud?
