Equipment rental from the owner

I'm trying to get some feedback from hobby photographers on a new concept:
The idea is to allow owners of photographic equipment to rent it out to others. You can post your equipment for rental on our website and people that need equipment can rent it there directly from the owner. We would offer insurance options for expensive equipment rentals.
Is there anybody on this group who sometimes rents cameras or equipment from a rental shop? Have you ever given your camera/equipment to a friend?

Quaint idea, my gut feeling is that most photographers would be happy to rent equipment from others but not so happy to rent their own out ... could be wrong though

I would agree.. You can knock a lens and damage it wihtout any visual signs.. You might not know for some time somethings wrong..

Too much hassle with too many potential problems.. but agree totally wiht the above quote :)

I'd look at this from the opposite perspective. If I were to rent a lens or body, I'd want to know that it's in decent nick and reliable. I'd also want to know that I've got some form of recourse if I was sent tat.

Not really a viable business plan I'd say.

I would let a friend borrow my gear but no way rent it to someone i dont know.

Rob.

I wouldn't even let a friend borrow my camera let alone random people.

My feelings are also as above.

Another issue could be, someone renting out their gear which they know is not up to speck, then trying to blame the person renting it for damage.

The insurance cover would probably not make it a viable plan after a few claims.

It sounds a good idea in principle, but maybe not in practice.

This is an interesting idea. Julia, if you want some advice based on my practical experience of hiring out equipment, please feel free to ask.
