Thats lovely! Very clear and great detail. She looks lovely and smiley! :)

Yep, works well for me, good light, enough shadow detail to retain 'modelling' and a lovely 'warmth' to her smile.

My only slight cricism is that it's just a bit tight in the frame, and I'd possibly clone that slight shadow above her right shoulder, but no biggy.

Good one

Lovely shot, but I agree with Les, too tight a crop.

Still, what a lovely smiley face :):)

thanks for the feedback peeps
interesting comments about the closesness of the crop

be very keen to hear more opinions

Hmm! can I be honest Mike ... I dont think youve really flattered your lovely lady too much here.
Im not so sure its the crop thats wrong, perhaps focal distance?
Theres also quite heavy shadow from the cheek bones down with the overhead light bringing out the nose more than any other feature.
You also have a colour caste going on here. (tungsten?)

I had a fiddle myself but not sure I actually made things better ... changed them yes, but better ...not so sure

At least youre lucky enough to have a willing model on hand who owns a fantastic warm smile ... so plenty more opportunities for you! :)

Thanks Glo, always value your feedback!
(not that I don't value everyone else's - hole, digging!!)

I did wonder about the colour caste
it was tungtsen (+ telly) lighting
I fiddled; and same as you; changes but no improvement

was a bit close, too (other end of the sofa)
so probably too close

My excuse is I was just fiddling with the new toy ('onest guv!)

must try harder!

Well you cant have new toys and not play now can you! ;)

Here's my attempt at removing the colour caste, as I say, not sure its any better.
I fiddled about with selective colour a little.

My eyes are so tired from yesterday though, so not sure if I havent just buggered it totally.

Enjoy the new toys, look forward to further pics! (y)

well she likes it! - what did you do?

Erm!!!!
Well first off, I selected the teeth and dodged them slighty ... same with the eyes.
Then I went image adjustments>selective colour and played with the sliders until I came to something that I felt pleased my eye.
I dodged & burned a few areas (for instance I always burn around the lashes especially on females).
Then gave the image the very slightest of sharpens with the smart sharpen tool... and voila!

I really must get a more organised workflow sorted though.

:)(y)
have to see if I can mimic that!

Hey Mike was this taken before you told your lady the price of the 5D? Must have been I reckon as she's smiling :p ;) Nice shot too BTW ;)

Thats nice and sharp Mike (y)
I won't mention the colour cast as its already been done :D

Its a really nice pic, but I think the white balance is a bit too much on the warm side. Did you shoot this is raw? if you did this can easily be adjusted and should improve it a fair bit.

I like the crop, she looks great and lovely smile, what more do you need :D

thanks for the feedback everyone
most appreciated!

merlin:
I'll have a smugmug play today see what I can come up with, thanks

Newbie at portraits here: what was the lighting? Single light from behind right and reflector to the front high?

nah nothing so sophisticated
single tungsten bulb (above my head and off to the right)
television (BBC 1 as I recall) loew and to the left

not set up that way, she was watching the box while I fiddled with my new toy
she looked - I snapped!

I think you will find Ch4 gives a better modelling light, although I find ITV a tad harsh ;)
