Hi, stupid newbie question

I have a Sigma DL lens that use to work fine on my Canon 20d
Now all of a sudden its decided not to.

When camera is turned on Err 99 is displayed but camera is fine when fitted with a Canon EFS lens........ HELP!

Is the aperture ring locked?

i've been getting this intermittently with my new sigma 50mm f1.4 since saturday. turning the body off/on again seems to clear it and it does it again a while later. doesn't even have to be used. never happens with my other lens.

would be interested to know if there is a simple solution, but it sounds like we might have a problem :(

(i've tried cleaning contacts etc and all that, btw).

@the greek - have you tried cleaning the contacts on the lens? it might be that... if you're lucky!

Thats exactly what happened to mine, now makes no difference if camera is turned on and off or lens removed and put back on again.

Hi Guys,

This is a very common and vey annoying error that Canon cameras (esp. the xxD range (and the 40D in particular)) seem to be prone too.

Err-99 is Canons general "catch all" code and has a lot of meanings. Best case is you need a new backup battery or to clean the contacts on the lens/body, worse case the shutter has packed in!

This is the best reference I know about the issue and what to do about it. It might be handy to make it a "sticky"

Sigma lenses aren't 100% compatible with Canon bodies. Since Canon won't release the specs, Sigma have to reverse-engineer the mount and electronics. They achieve 99.9% compatibility, enough to work OK with the current line-up of bodies (or not, as the case may be ;) ) but not necessarily with a future body - or indeed the same body with a firmware update.

This is why older Canon-fit Sigma lenses that worked fine with film SLRs often no longer work with digital bodies and require re-chipping. The equivalent Canon EF lenses do work fine.

If it's a ploy by Canon to discourage the use of 3rd party lenses with their cameras, it's worked for me :( I'd want any lens to be 100% compatible now and in the future - I tend to steer clear of Sigma, Tamron etc. for this reason.

Well, you can hardly blame them really for trying their hardest to discourage the use of third party lenses. While they can be good for the consumer (cost less) they essentially steal away business from the OEM.

Wouldn't really explain why its all of a sudden stopped working

I had a similar problem with my 20D some time ago, although not with a Sigma lens.

I reset the camera and downloaded the latest firmware and it did the trick.

But for the price difference you can afford to buy a new 3rd party lens with each upgrade
