Error message rEE ON NikonD500

Got a used Nikon 300mm f4 D lens today and it works just fine on the camera. However, when I attach a Nikon TC 14EIII teleconverter I get the error message rEE flashing. The handbook says this means the aperture ring is not locked at the minimum f32. Well it is.
Also I have cleaned the contacts and the message persists.
Any comments please

The telecon isn't compatible then

The Mk3 isn't compatible with some older lenses, it's designed specifically for newer and some 'exotic' older lenses you need a Mk2.

Gramps is right it's not compatible. The older (and cheaper) MK2 will work fine with the 300 mm f4 AF-S D.

Autofocus is available only with cameras that offer f/8 support. These include the D5, D500, D4/D4S, Df, D800/D800E, D810/D810A, D600/ D610, D750, D7100 and D7200.

Was reading Rockwells review of the III version and he also says it is not compatible with lenses with an aperture ring as mine does. Thanks will look for a Mk 2
