Hi I have the older canon 580 ex flash guns. Im thinking of upgrading my camera to a 5d mark 2 which is ettl 2. would it be compatible with the old 580 flash guns that I have or will I also need to buy the 580 ex 2.

It will work fine, just not have some of the weatherproofing of the II model. The 580EX also does not have the interference problem that causes problems with the pocket wizard radio range on the II.

Sorry my mistake its the 550 ex I have. So can you use the old canon flashguns that are ettl and not ettl2 on the new cameras that have ettl 2. Does it not make a difference.

Its nice to know that if I upgrade my camera I dont need to also change all my flashguns as well.

Actually, it's one better than what was said above. A 550ex will operate in E-TTL II with a 5D Mark II. The difference between E-TTL and E-TTL II is predominantly (if not entirely) to do with the camera body.

Essentially the two main differences are that with E-TTL II :

a)the flash metering will use all of the available zones for evaluative metering rather than bias the metering towards the focus point you are using

b) it uses the focal distance data from the lens to assist in flash exposure (unless you're using the flash in bounce position or off-camera, for obvious reasons)
