I've been offered a very good deal on an unused Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 (not that theyre that expensive to start with!), and as I'm developing a thing for fast primes I'm very tempted, especially as I'm not too happy with my Canon 35mm f2, and I think 28mm would be ever so slightly more useful.

Does anyone have any experiences with it? Looking at the reviews it seems to be on a par with the more expensive 1.8 in sharpness at 2.8.

I've no experience with the EF 28mm f/2.8, but I've always been under the impression that it's very similar to the EF 35/2 which I do own - though I do rather like it.

Sure you're not confusing it with the 24mm f/2.8, which is said to be a much better performer?

I have FD versions of all of the above, which I believe have the same optical forumlas as the EF lenses, and it fits with my experience using them. The 24mm f2/.8 is wonderful, the 35mm and 28mm f/2.8 are fair, but not in the same league.
 
I do like the 35mm f/2 but although it a lovely lens I was never 100% happy with it, its the only lens I ever had to micro adjust and as such I dont know if I've ever got the best out of it...

I'd love a 24mm but at the mo I cant really justify the expenditure.

Well its not exactly a fast prime - and I hear that lenses like the 17-55 can outperform this lens at 28mm 2.8.

I've seen these lenses going for £120 used from LCE.

Indeed, its not really a 'fast' prime, as far as primes go, but at 2.8 (or so I've heard) its sharper over the whole frame, on a crop at least, as other faster primes (such as the 50mm 1.8 & 1.4, 35 f/2 which I have).

Checked LCE and none seem to have one in stock, they were my fist port of call, lol!

I certainly cant afford the 17-55 2.8 which ideally would be the one for me. Maybe I should buy a half decent flash and in the meantime save for the 17-55 which I've always wanted truth be told?

If I were in your position I might be tempted to sell the 35 F2 and try and get hold of either the 28mm 1.8 or the Sigma 30mm 1.4....?

Or yes... wait until you can buy the 17-55!!! If you can w....a........ii.....t..!!!

Lol! Actually, the Sigma is a good call, bit more expensive than the 28 f2.8 but much better. Hmmmmm.....
