Ext HD down!

Hi all, After returning from week away and all was fine before I shut everything down my WD 1tb MyBook isnt booting up, The blue LED lights come on once plugged in at USB but no noise or not recognised on PC.

Any advice
 
Could be a couple of things, but as the blue light is on the it looks as though it's getting power.

The problem may be with the drive itself, that may have died, it does happen more often than you think. Alternatively it may be that the electronics that have died and the drive is OK , it's just that it can't talk to anything.

First thing is to leave the drive connected, switch it off and then on again and see if anything changes. If it's still not playing ball you could try extracting the hard disk from the drive and fitting it into an external enclosure and see if the works.

If it doesn't work then it looks like the hard drive itself has died. You could then purchase an a new drive and fit it into the case.
 
Had exactly the same thing with the one I had about two years ago, I ripped it out and stuffed it in the pc, and it is still working to this day.
 
I have a Freecom external HD that did this, it ended up spinning up eventually and promptly made clicking/grinding sounds. Bye bye hard disk.

one of our users bought in their personal iomega drive (we fix stuff for biscuits/cake) and it was clicking etc.. took the drive out of the enclosure and it was perfect.. which was odd.
 
Hmm, maybe I should try that - I've still got it hanging around here. Trouble is, I've tried getting the enclosure off once or twice before, and failed...

Cheers John, Although it was unplugged for the week I was away and has power but boots up via USB I did unplug it from the back and reconnected and its worked. Not sure if its on its way out but needless to say Im backing it up in case. Thanks
 
Your problem is that 'WD' logo on the case. I've had 3 of those damned things fail on me, and 2 or 3 - maybe more - internal drives fail. I'll never by another WD drive of any type. Likewise Maxtor. Samsung is looking like the front runner these days.
