I have just had a dabble in close up photography (moths, butterflies etc). I currently have 60d and a canon 100 f2.8 macro lens. Someone at work as suggested i would be better with some extension tubes. Being a bit of a novice what if any benefits would i get from them, and what would they do?

They enable you to focus closer to the subject giving an increased magnification without losing IQ. Not sure of exact measurements but say the 100 L macro has a minimum focal distance of 10 inches and gives a 1:1 ratio, by adding some tubes would give you say a 7.5 inch minimum focal difference and would increase the ratio to say 1:1.25. (Figures are not accurate, just for example. I'm sure others will be on later to answer the question exactly, but you get the idea).

They do make it a bit more difficult in the field as you have to get closer to the subject you alter lighting etc, and I would advise you to get the Auto Focus set if you do get some as the manual set are a PITA.

Thanks Stuart, struggled to get close enough to the butterflies without wanting to get even closer.
