I have been interested in shooting video alot lately and I am getting to grips quite well with it. Can any suggest a relatively inexpensive hot shoe mic? Thanks

The Rode VideoMic is pretty well regarded.
Whilst not that inexpensive, i don't think you'd want to go too much cheaper otherwise there won't be a significant enough increase in performance.

Yeah I have looked at that one. It would be for recording music. Need to check to see how it fares.

Depends on how loud it is, should be fine with just a couple of acoustic instruments.. if it's a gig type situation with really loud music then you'd probably best recording it from the mixing desk.

Speaking as a sound professional, and having been trained in video at the BBC, getting good sound is not just adding a Rode video mic. The mic amps in DSLRs are truly woeful.
Spend your money on a separate recorder (they are inexpensive these days). Even the built in mics on those will give way better results.
Your iPhone with an IK multimedia mic and a handclap for sync will yield better results than a dslr.
Hiring sound gear is cheap as chips.
Decent sound will separate your videos from the chaff much quicker than an f2.8 pro zoom will. Sacrilege to say on a photography forum, but it is very true.
Watch TV - more viewers complain about poor sound than the spherical aberration or coma or the poor depth of field. Get my point?

That's a good point. It's only amateur video and personal stuff. I am sure the sound is super important but I really just want it to sound better than the in built mic. Mostly I will add a music soundtrack instead of the source audio for personal stuff(kids running about etc)

I have put on magic lantern, just getting to grips with things at the minute. Video on a DSLR is definitely something I have wanted to get better at and pursue
