External microphone for Canon 500D?

Amazon are selling 2 (that's I've seen) microphones advertised as being compatible with the 500D. Here is a link to one of them

Am I right in thinking that NO external microphone is compatible with the 500D because its not supposed to have a 3.5mm microphone jack?

Rode Video Mike or Video Mike Pro, are probably the cheapest that would be worth buying. Has a 3.5 plug and fits my 7D so should be OK for your 500D

From what I remember the Canon 500D doesn't have an external mic input so no microphone will be suitable. You can have an offline recorder and sync them up later on a PC.

My point was that the 500D doesn't actually have a microphone in socket. It has an on board mic and that's it. That's one of the main differences between the 500D and the 550D. Yet someone is selling microphones claiming that they will work with the 500D.

Doing some research it seems that the 500D can be modified to add a 3.5mm socket but this involves categorically voicing the warranty.

Just record sound separately and sync it in post. The 500D is not brilliant for video anyway, it doesn't even shoot 1080p at a usable frame rate.
