Does anyone know the ideal file size, image size for uploading images to facebbok?

I've noticed loads of times that images uploaded to fb and flickr look very flat/ soft on fb compared to flickr even if I choose the high res option when uploading to fb.

I believe the maximum size is now 720 x 720 pixels - but then read somewhere that whatever ever size is uploaded, Facebook compresses them.

- So in order to make your pictures look sharp, I guess you should resize them so that the longest side is 720 pixels.

Regards

Not sure that's right tbh, a friend and fellow photographer uploaded some last night that were 1000px along the longest size and they are razor sharp

I'm guessing it must be something to do with file size at upload... But I can't find anything that will prove it.

Mea Culpa......

I think I was referring to the 'profile photo' ideal size dimensions - as I had to change my wife's earlier this year.

But looking on Facebook's help pages they appear to have changed yet again and for a profile photo it can now be up to 4mb in size and other photos can be uploaded to a maximum of 15mb - but no hints I could find to the ideal size.

Facebook was resizing all large photos to 720px on longest edge so for the best image quality you would upload photos already at 720px and sharpened as you wish to prevent facebook resizing the photos for you and not sharpening them properly. (Also makes the upload quicker as there is no conversion time)

Things have just recently changed though. As above there is now a filesize limit so you can upload massive image comparatively. Facebook stores the original, but they still get DISPLAYED at 720px along the longest edge, and there is a download link below the photo (on left) for people to download the fullsize original. Not many know this so if you're uploading full size work and not just fun snaps don't get caught out; watermark it! If theres no need for people to be able to download the fullsize version resize the photos yourself to 720px as i said at start, control you're own sharpening and they'll look great (and upload much quicker).

Ticking high quality doesn't stop them compressing the file. I use a Facebook plugin from lightroom.
