I was trying to explain to a friend about photographing things that move (panning, shutter speed etc) and wanted to find that famous image of a racing car in motion (c~1920).
The shot was panned and slightly distorted by the action of the curtains to give even more of a sense of movement by making the wheels oval shaped, a little like a cartoon representation of fast car.

My searches have been fruitless, can anyone point me to the image or know of the photographer?

He was the fellow that did the famous one of the woman on the stairs as well. I remember watching a documentary about him yonks ago.

The series was called "The Genius of Photography" and was shown on the BBC4
- unfortunately not available on iPlayer, maybe on BritBox? but I don't have a subscription.
