faulty 25-105 l lens err01 code

In the middle of a wedding yesterday my 24-105 lens started playing up. it is showing the err01 code and says camera cant communicate with lens. After a bit of playing about this morning I have found that when wide open at f4 and at 24mm it works fine but as soon as you stop down and zoom in at all the code will come up after 1 or 2 shots, the viewfinder also goes dark which would suggest the blades are sticking.
anyone had anything similar?
 
If its ok wide open but the viewfinder stays dark using smaller apertures. It may be the iris blades sticking. as the shutter is behind the mirror.

The lens does the same thing on my other camera and the viewfinder goes dark only when the message is displayed ?
 
When the message shows on screen I can see the blades are stuck
 
Try with freshly charged battery and cleaned contacts. If that fails. Looks like you may have to send for repair.

It will most likely be the ribbon cable to the aperture unit (power diaphragm assembly) has failed due to flexing.
It's a reasonably common failure on the 24-105 though not as common as it is on the 17-85.
Not a DIY fix unless you like small, fiddly parts and have decent mechanical knowledge.
My suggestion would be to send it off for repair.
 
Thanks everyone, looks like the lens is going on holidays. Im in Northern Ireland and this is the 1st time ive had to send anything away.... where is the best place to send it.
 
I would probably give Canon a call, they probably have fixed price for that sort of repair.
There are people on Ebay who offer a repair service for the 17-85 but I don't think I've seen a listing for the 24-105 and tbh, with it being an expensive lens I think I'd want to send it to someone reputable.
I've repaired a few Canon lenses myself but then I'm mechanically minded and don't mind small, fiddly bits.
If you did fancy trying it you'd save yourself a lot of money as the part really isn't that expensive and is easily available.
