At the moment I have a 60d and a Tamron 17-50 non vc and a Sigma 10-20 which I am very happy with.
I have just bought a used Canon 5d3 body but as yet I don't have a wide angle lens to go with it, the only lens in my kit bag is a 100 f2.8 that will be usable.
I am on a budget of £500 so I am open to suggestions as to which to go for.
I was leaning towards a canon 17-40 that gets some good reviews, but also some bad ones ?.
Sigma and Tamron also do WA lenses in my budget, which is another option to look at.
The main use will be landscapes so a fast lens is not that important.
Thanks

Canon 24-05 or Sigma's new equivalent is a great place to start.

If you want a very wide angle on the 5D, then the 17-40 gets a very good following and certainly one I'd consider if I was after a very wide angle...

17-40 divides opinion.

At f11 on a tripod for landscapes it's a good weatherproof option.

It gets a kicking because at f4 it's not the best and obviously it's not the 16-35 f2.8. Also lots of people buy one because they wan't an L lens and expect miracles when they try to use it as a walkabout on a 1.6 crop body.

For what it's meant to do it's a good value FF option and despite more expensive releases from Canon it continues to produce fantastic shots.

If you want VERY wide angles, the Sigma 12-24 is pretty much as wide as you can get without going into fisheye territory. QC was apparently a bit iffy on early models, although mine is fine, so try the actual lens you might be interested in buying before purchasing.

Tokina is another option. There wide angles are great. You could also look at a 24mm f2.8 prime and you will have something left for a 50mm prime or something.

Get yourself a secondhand 17-40, there are plenty on the market and don't seem to suffer any inherent issues, I borrowed one to try out once on a 5D at a wedding, built like a brick sh**house, great quality images and plenty wide on a full frame - a no brainer!!
