File naming fiasco!

Hello all, I have, what to me is an odd one. I have been going through some pictures I took this week while away and something odd seems to have happened to the way my camera names files.

Camera in question is a Nikon D300s.

I started out at DSC_0001 and the camera carried on like this until about DCS_8417, then for what appears to be no reason started naming my files, _DSC8855. So now all the files pre this number appear first and the "_" bit has moved to the front of file views! yes I could sort by date taken and I have now but it's a puzzler for me. I have just taken a shot and it's now on DSC_1865...

Any ideas?

That looks like you changed your colour profile settings. RGB colour profile starts with the DSC, Adobe starts with the _DSC.

I don't think there is any way around it in the camera, but you can do bulk renaming wih loads of programs, I use Thumbsplus

I'm on my way to find it now, do you know if it does find and replace? IE fine "_D" and replace with "D"

Whenever I import files to Lightroom I have them automatically renamed to YYYYMMDD_HHMMSS_Filenumber. That way they are always self-sorting, no matter how many cameras I use during the same shoot (e.g. a wedding) and I will never suffer the problem of duplicates or things going out of sync when the file count wraps round from 9999 back to 0000 (or 0001).

Not sure about the D300, but with D2x, D3 and D3x you can specify a custom prefix...
Mine are RK1 and RK2 for my D3x bodies and D3a and D3b for the D3 bodies...
