Fill in flash i think

Hi it's me again
I was wondering. Is there anyway I can turn off the bright light that comes on first before the flash. Really blinding.
I have the nikon d3100

Do you mean the ad assist light or is this from the flash?

I think you mean the AF assist light. It shoul be an on/off option in the menu system.

Yep, although then you won't be able to AF in low light...

If I buy a flashgun and I left it on would it still blind people

With the external flash you can aim it up which is better at not blinding people.

You just turn the flash off if you don't need it.

I've turned my af assist off and had no problems with focusing.

It's the af assist light, you can turn it off in the menu. getting an external flash usually has a red af assist on them.
