Filter stacking

Hello all,

Is there an optimum order for stacking filters?

I have used grads and ND (6 & 10 stop) filters individually without any problem, but recently I combined a 6 stop with a grad over a circular polariser, hoping to blur some nice looking clouds over a highland landscape.

The end result had massive flaring across the image, basically unusable.

Using hitech filters with a lee holder and wide angle adaptor ring.

Any views or guidance appreciated!

It depends on the filters, I can stack a Lee grad, Big Stopper and Lee CPL together and get no flare, if I introduce my Hitech reverse ND grad into the mix I get flare, to a lesser or greater extent, usually if shooting with the sun in the frame but to an angle.
