Filters for landscape: canon 10-22

The canon 10-22 lens was delivered yesterday. Yay!! Looking forward to have a go.
Iam planning to buy a hood and uv filter to start off.
What are the filters that i would need to buy for this lens? And where would you buy? Amazon?

Grab a circular polariser too... Hugely useful on that lens when doing landscape. Sadly, with a 77mm filter ring they're not the cheapest.
Try and find/buy the slim/thin ones too to help alleviate vignetting.

Don't bother with the hood, it's a waste of money. It's too wide, taking up masses of space in the bag; and it's too short, offering minimal protection and only cutting out side-light over a very small angle. Besides, the 10-22 is one of the most flare-resistant lenses in existence, it doesn't really need the hood for flare prevention.

Unless, of course, you insist on sticking a so-called 'protective' filter in front of it. In which case, you get to waste double the money.

The 10-22mm is getting pretty wide to use a polarizer on, could be useful for reflections on water(cutting them out at one point to hihlight something underneither for example) but at the wide end you'll likely get uneven darkening on the sky.

Personally I find the vast majority of my filter use for landscape on my 10-22mm is graduated ND's, they can really make a massive difference with more dynamitic lighting.

Most opinion is that a filter system is better but they can be expensive, espeically for a wide lens like the 10-22mm where you'll probabley need a 100mm system like the Lee or Hitech rather than the common 85mm Cokin. Basically a clip on holder infront of the lens that allows you to selectively darken the image with graduated ND plates of plastic/glass.

That said I did find personally that a 2 stop screw in grad was much more useful than common opinion made it. You can't shift the graduation but it is pretty soft and I find when I shoot ultrawide I do tend towards a more(if not totally) central horizon. I bought my 2 stop Tiffen first used and I still use it alot even now I have a Lee system, mainly during the day where its generally just right for stopping the higlights on clouds blowing out when shooting towards the sun.

Don't bother with a UV filter, you'll sacrifice some of the love,y optical quality of the 10-22, and you don't need to filter out UV light anyway.

I think under some situations CPLs can work rather well. I'd also consider a wide angle Cokin holder and some wide Cokin grads to start with.

+1 for going down the system route. Initial outlay might be more but as you get more filters further on the line (highly likely if you get the landscape bug!!) the cost of going for separate good quality 77mm ones will soon start rocketing.

Also you may be limited with wide angle lenses if you want to use a combination of separate screw in filters (e.g. an ND, a grad and a polariser) at the same time - they may well start encroaching into the frame at lower focal lengths. And yes there are frequently times when I've used all three together!!
