firmware won't transfer to memory card

Could just be that the card reader doesn't want to write to the card. Inserting the card a bit tighter might help.
I got much better results after having switched to the Lexar USB3 card reader, it always writes to the card without much fiddling.
There's another issue with some SD cards where there's alchemy required to write to them. I can't explain why it works, but you might want to try switching the card from unlocked to locked three times. Then set it to locked, wait thirty seconds, and then set it to unlocked again, and try to write to it. I have read reports from people who say it works

I don't have a card reader for these card memory cards so was just connecting the camera to the computer to do it. It says on the website that you can do it that way but so far no joy. The 40D doesn't use SD cards which is a shame because I can just plug an SD straight into my computer.

Does the card have a write protect switch in the wrong position?
Are you using a card reader or trying to write via the camera connected via USB? If you're using the camera as your card reader/writer then possibly you will need to use EOS Utility to transfer the firmware file. I believe EOS Utility does include a feature to apply a firmware upgrade, but the firmware file must still be placed on the card before the update can be applied and I guess this is where EOS Utility might facilitate the transfer of the file in the first instance. I don't know for sure because I've always used a card reader for such things and I've never suffered this problem in seven years of DSLR ownership of seven different DSLR bodies and four versions of the Windows operating system.

There's no need to go for the "best". That was just to set a ceiling on price. You should be able to find something much cheaper if you'd rather spend less. It's a pity that Amazon has just put up the minimum price for free delivery. You could always look here for something less spendy....That's great thanks a lot

Just make sure anything you pick includes CF card compatibility, as not all do.
If the PC and camera won't play nicely together by default that was the purpose behind my suggestion to use EOS Utility, which will hopefully open up that avenue.
