Hi I am thinking if buying my first dslr second hand and was wondering what people thought about the canon EOS 450D or the Sony alpha 350. Which one us best. Can anyone recommend and good second camera web sites.

Not the most balanced of arguments, unless I missed a wink smiley! ;)

I've had a go with a Sony Alpha, and found it a decent camera. The most obvious reason to go with Nikon or Canon is wider availability of lenses or accessories, but a Sony/Pentax/whatever might be ideal for the OP.

Keep an open mind :)

I've also used a Sony Alpha, it's not as good as a proper SLR.
 
I have just been throughthe same process with you. One piece of advice I would recommend to you is to invest in decent glass (lens). The lens makes the most difference to image quality, so look to spend about 40/60 on body and lens.

When I bought my DSLR I bought a used Canon 450D and a Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 Macro for £435.00 including a bag and memory card.
 
I would be inclined to go with either Canon or Nikon as previously said for better availability of lenses and accessories. The 450D is a good camera I still have my 350D which is still taking excellent shots.

Not wanting to prolong this, but I believe all the earlier Alpha models were "proper" SLR's, in that they have a mirror reflecting light to the viewfinder that flips out of the way to expose the sensor... only the very recent ones with the translucent mirrors are not "proper" SLR's. Unless I've missed something.

Or were you just inferring that you don't like Sonys?
 
Fair enough, I don't have a lot of love for them myself, being a Nikon user... was merely trying to give the OP a balanced opinion :)
 
Thats intresting Barry, I nearly brought a Sony A900 and I dont know what it was (apart from the money, I just could not justify over 2 grand at the time) the Nikon I have felt better build quality, and felt better in my hand, more solid (does that make sense?)

Having said that, I have a Sony TV, Sony Music system, Im looking at a Sony Nex-5 as a second camera, my wife and son both have Sony moblies, in that respect I dont think you can beat Sony products, but I respect you views as Im not a very expierenced photographer yet, and have not had much expirence with DSLR's
