And may I say it's rather nice too it could maybe use a little more sharpening and a boost in levels though. But you're on the right track

if in photoshop use a high pass mask layer and only pick up the intnded parts.

Yep. Try using a higher f stop and not underexposing so much. It's also pretty easy to brighten up using software like photoshop

I like this pic, the flower looks so sad! I would probably play around with the levels and sharpening a little to try bring out more detail
